Only this time, it’s more evident that the brand cannot seem to catch wind of what made it popular a decade ago.

The Pedro Pascal-led “from Disney+ to a theater near you” legs of The Mandalorian earned $81.96 million in its debut, which is slightly below Solo‘s $84 million. OK reviews, but an A- from CinemaScore means that folks will still come for whatever Disney/Lucasfilm conjures up next in the sci-fi universe. No, we don’t believe this will be a tale of misery (Solo underwent extensive reshoots, which catapulted its budget to $275 million and a late-game director swap, and it was a commercial disaster), and it’s not too shabby for a Star Wars spinoff to open just below $100 million domestically as the budget is closer to $165 million. It will pass $150 million worldwide tonight, so as long as it legs out like Solo to $394 million globally, that will still be a “passable” result (by Disney’s standards). And yes, Disney can’t bank on a Lilo & Stitch live-action reboot, which they could have last year, and that would have accounted for the majority of the previous Memorial Day weekend totals.

Does the Disney+ factor still come into play here? Yes and no. Had it been more like the Sequel trilogy, maybe it would have had more legs and a better domestic debut. But, for a lower-level spinoff that assures Disney might have grasped things once again, this shall do.

Now, moving on to the grand news: Obsession has surprisingly become more of an obsession with audiences. Curry Barker’s high-concept chiller ballooned an additional 30% to earn $22.4 million in its second weekend, which makes it the third-biggest hold for a feature not to distribute over (or around) the Christmas season. Truth be told, it has already smashed Talk to Me’s $49 million domestic total and will pass Saw’s $55.1 million to top any Lionsgate non-sequel horror film and any of A24’s horror pictures in U.S. grosses (not counting for inflation, as Saw dropped back in 2004). This is the kind of “non-IP, drop your phones to go see right now” films out there. Do we have reason to believe it will pass $100 million domestic? Unless it drops dead in a week or two, it will pass that benchmark. Bravo indeed to Focus Features and Blumhouse.

Michael has earned $20.01 million this weekend, bringing it just shy of $315 million domestically as it moves along towards passing $800 million worldwide (which should happen by Tuesday/Wednesday). It opens in Japan on June 12th, so expect more legs in the meantime and see how much of a boost it gets to help it reach Bohemian Rhapsody. The Devil Wears Prada 2 will be passing $200 million domestic to wrap up the Memorial Day factor, and it has already passed $600 million globally; $700 million, anyone?

The Sheep Detectives will be passing $75 million worldwide by tonight. Passenger earned $8.7 million in its debut. Mortal Kombat II will pass $120 million worldwide tomorrow. I Love Boosters earned $3.723 million in its debut, a modest victory. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will wrap up around $1 billion worldwide, and Project Hail Mary has passed $675 million globally.

Next weekend sees the release of The Breadwinner, Backrooms, Power Ballad, and Miss You, Love You.

Box Office: ‘Michael’ Returns to Helm The Weekend and Moonwalks Past $700M Globally https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/05/17/box-office-michael-returns-to-helm-the-weekend-and-moonwalks-past-700m-globally/ https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/05/17/box-office-michael-returns-to-helm-the-weekend-and-moonwalks-past-700m-globally/#respond Sun, 17 May 2026 20:14:42 +0000 https://atthemoviesonline.com/?p=37976 Well, the King of Pop has assuredly (and inevitably) returned to the top of the box office for the weekend, earning $26.125 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic cume to $282.7 million. It debuted in South Korea at $4.9 million and will get released in Japan on June 12. So, yeah, it’s already past $703 million worldwide, and will most likely end its run around $350 million domestic and $880 million worldwide. But hang on, that does not factor in Japan, which has a great support for Jackson’s name, so it’s a safe thing to believe Bohemian Rhapsody‘s $910 million global total is in grave “musical hits” danger.

Could Michael do its utmost to leg out towards $400 million domestic? A bridge too far, shall we say, but the more it accumulates, the more it is on its way to pass Oppenheimer as the biggest straight-up drama in North America. To be honest, once it passes $337 million, it will only be behind The Hunger Games ($409 million) and Catching Fire ($425 million) under Lionsgate’s banner. Let’s presume it earns around $40-50 million in Japan (think along the lines of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avatar: The Way of Water): that’ll easily make it the highest-earning musical in the world and the second-highest-earning biopic of all time, behind Oppenheimer‘s $960 million. If it supercharges its way in Japan, however, then all bets are off, and it will assuredly surpass $1 billion worldwide in June. Even if it’s six decades or more to come, Mr. Jackson still rules the world. (And yes, we didn’t factor in Russia’s soon-to-be-released date on the 28th, so we’ll play it safe and say it earns a minimal but helpful $10-15 million over there; who knows, maybe it does $26 million like Now You See Me 3).

In other news, The Devil Wears Prada 2 earned $18 million in its third weekend. It’ll probably have a better hold over Memorial Day weekend, since last weekend was Mother’s Day. It’s almost at $550 million worldwide. Newcomer Obsession opened with highly positive reviews and $16.1 million in its debut. That makes it Focus’s third biggest debut, just behind Atomic Blonde‘s $17 million and Nosferatu‘s $22 million. Ahem, this is the content Blumhouse should be releasing!

In more serious news, Mortal Kombat II took a rather substantial hit, earning $13.4 million (-65% drop) in its second weekend. Yes, it has passed $101 million worldwide and already soared past its predecessor’s $84.4 million total (still subject to COVID-related variables). You’d think WB would release this feature this weekend to give it the ample legs and juice expected for Memorial Day weekend. This weekend has proven to be a behemoth for the likes of Star Wars prequels, the Shrek quadrilogy, The Matrix Reloaded, Deadpool 2, John Wick: Chapter 3, and Final Destination: Bloodlines. Maybe next time.

The Sheep Detectives will be passing $30 million domestically by tonight. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has passed $964 million worldwide, as it fights tooth and nail to get close to $1 billion. Project Hail Mary will end its run under $690 million worldwide. Top Gun re-released with $3.1 million. And newcomers In the Grey and Is God Is earned $3 million and $2.22 million in their debuts, respectively.

Next weekend sees the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu, Passenger, I Love Boosters, Tuner, and Corporate Retreat.

Box Office: ‘Mortal Kombat II’ Opens Well Despite The Retaining Legs of ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ and ‘Michael’ Over Mother’s Day Weekend https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/05/10/box-office-mortal-kombat-ii-opens-well-despite-the-retaining-legs-of-devil-wears-prada-2-and-michael-over-mothers-day-weekend/ https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/05/10/box-office-mortal-kombat-ii-opens-well-despite-the-retaining-legs-of-devil-wears-prada-2-and-michael-over-mothers-day-weekend/#respond Sun, 10 May 2026 19:13:19 +0000 https://atthemoviesonline.com/?p=37937 Yours truly is less concerned about Warner Brothers’ Mortal Kombat II not attaining the gold for the weekend, thanks to a Mother’s Day infusion assist to The Devil Wears Prada 2 or the continued flamboyant success of Michael and his records still being broken six decades later, than the sequel earning $40 million in its debut (nearly double that of its predecessor’s launch back in 2021). It would be asinine not to claim the sequel had more of a killer instinct than filler compared to its predecessor, and audiences still jumped on board with the bloody action thanks to a B from CinemaScore and mildly positive reviews. It is intriguing to see how far it can leg out, much like the COVID releases (think Godzilla vs. Kong or Dune), which mostly catered to domestic totals to ensure a positive ROI.

If we look at the numbers, it’ll probably do much better in the U.S. and Canada than overseas (think along the lines of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Twisters, and Ghostbusters). If it plays in line with its predecessor’s legs, it’ll probably end its run around $85-90 million domestic and $150 million globally. That isn’t grave news, but it doesn’t necessarily warrant a Mortal Kombat III. It is skewing toward a more hardcore demographic that welcomes an unbridled amount of bloodshed, and those who grew up playing the video game on their screens. But then again, no one in the cast is considered a box office draw (Karl Urban has been more synonymous with supporting roles or PVOD content). In any case, WB will take its popcorn releases and enjoy them too.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 retained its crown with $43 million in its second weekend; it did have a sharp 70% Friday-to-Friday drop, but it regained its footing thanks to the female-led duo and the Mother’s Day event. It has already cleared its predecessor’s entire domestic and global lifetime gross (not counting inflation) as it has soared past $433 million worldwide. Next up, $500 million will be a bar passed before we know it.

Michael earned $36.5 million in its third weekend (a 33% drop) and has passed $240 million domestically. It’s already gunning for $600 million worldwide as it awaits the imminent releases in Japan and South Korea (which may boost it in more ways than expected). If the Moonwalk continues to prove otherworldly, this may climb to $350 million domestic. Oh, and the pop culture icon has debuted atop the charts for the sixth decade in a row, and the sequel is already underway, so take that to all the slandering pundits! Nerves aside, this may continue to cause panic for Bohemian Rhapsody, as the King of Pop has already cleared its domestic run and may very well gun for its $910.8 millon global record for a biopic.

Newcomer The Sheep Detectives earned $15.9 million domestically in its debut; it has received excellent reviews but is underperforming for the $75 million-budgeted feature for the upcoming summer season. Other newcomer Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft—The Tour opened with $7.5 million in its debut; wow, that’s (co-director) James Cameron’s lowest earning weekend since The Abyss back in 1989 and his lowest wide release since The Terminator. No, it ain’t passing $1.486 billion this time for sure. Guess it’ll be time for the Russo brothers to stomp on his neck with Avengers: Doomsday if it can soar past $1 billion this coming Christmas season.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will pass $950 million worldwide sometime this week as it cruises towards $1 billion. Project Hail Mary has passed $650 million worldwide. Hokum earned $3.3 million in its second weekend, while Deep Water and Animal Farm have collapsed thanks to the higher-viewed demographic tales in town.

Next weekend sees the release of Obsession, Is God Is, In the Grey, Magic Hour, Forge, and Driver’s Ed.

Box Office: Thanks to a Roaring Start with ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ and Continued Success of ‘Michael’, the Summer of 2026 Looks Promising https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/05/03/box-office-thanks-to-a-roaring-start-with-devil-wears-prada-2-and-continued-success-of-michael-the-summer-of-2026-looks-promising/ https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/05/03/box-office-thanks-to-a-roaring-start-with-devil-wears-prada-2-and-continued-success-of-michael-the-summer-of-2026-looks-promising/#respond Sun, 03 May 2026 20:17:24 +0000 https://atthemoviesonline.com/?p=37842 Wait, so it’s a kickoff to a hot summer that isn’t struck with the lightning of a superhero (or well-renowned IP) feature? I’ll be.

20th Century Studios’ The Devil Wears Prada 2 opened with $77 million in its domestic debut. Yes, the 20-year-old sequel nabbed a bigger launch than Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts last year ($74 million domestic debut, $162 million worldwide). For simply a “real-world live-action comedy”, this is the second-largest opening behind The Hangover Part II. With known female leads (thanks to fans’ knowledge of Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep), positive reviews, and an A- from CinemaScore, there is a possibility for the sequel to roar above and beyond. Looking at legs, it has already earned $234 million in its global debut. It could very easily pass $200 million domestic and $600 million globally, which would push it past Marvel/DC kickstarters a la The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Ant-Man, Iron Man, Man of Steel, and Superman.

If it can gross over $700 million worldwide, that means it’ll be the highest-earning Disney movie since Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($855 million globally without any assistance from China). Yes, that doesn’t include Deadpool & Wolverine, but Disney had to pay for Fox’s rights to get this kind of boost for its once S-tiered IP. The women can lead the crowd of late with kick-ass time in the spotlight, thanks to the recent likes of Barbie, It Ends with Us, Freakier Friday, The Housemaid, and Wuthering Heights. Keep the punches rolling for the likes of this brand.

In other great holdover news, Michael dipped 44% in its second weekend, taking home $54 million, and will pass $200 million domestic by Wednesday. With $424 million globally thus far, it has already skyrocketed past Elvis. In terms of second-weekends, that’s just a step “worse” than Elvis (-41% from a $31 million domestic debut) and Bohemian Rhapsody (-37% from a $51 million debut). At this conventional rate, it will pass $300 million domestically and probably keep singing along to $700 million worldwide. Thus, it will become Lionsgate’s biggest “not a Hunger Games or Twilight sequel” grosser. If legs are still strong enough, could we see it outshine Bohemian Rhapsody‘s $910 million global cume? In any case, Lionsgate should be partying like it was the 2010s.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has passed $400 million domestically and will be passing $900 million worldwide any day now. It is still shooting for the stars to pass $1 billion, though a step well below its predecessor. Project Hail Mary continues to perform extraordinarily, having passed $318 million domestically and will soon pass $650 million worldwide. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy only added another $2.23 million domestic in its third weekend.

For the newcomers, though, it was relatively muted. Hokum earned $6.4 million in its debut, making it NEON’s fourth-biggest domestic launch behind Together ($6.7 million), The Monkey ($14 million), and Longlegs ($23 million). Animal Farm tanked with only a $3.4 million debut and a C from CinemaScore. Deep Water earned $2.1 million in its debut, while That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea earned $1 million.

Lastly, Hoppers will be rounding out its final run as it heads to PVOD, with $380 million worldwide.

Next weekend, we’ll see the release of Mortal Kombat II, The Sheep Detectives, Takeover, Influenced, Couples Weekend, and Neglected.

Box Office: ‘Michael’ Beat It With a Boffo $217 Million Global Opening, Continuing Lionsgate’s Winning Streak https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/04/26/box-office-michael-beat-it-with-a-boffo-217-million-global-opening-continuing-lionsgates-winning-streak/ https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/04/26/box-office-michael-beat-it-with-a-boffo-217-million-global-opening-continuing-lionsgates-winning-streak/#respond Sun, 26 Apr 2026 20:24:04 +0000 https://atthemoviesonline.com/?p=37792 Well, s***. A Victory Tour for the efforts of one of pop culture’s mightiest icons yielded a robust $97 million domestic debut and $217 million worldwide. For Michael, it was always about breaking into stardom, and hence, this weekend reflected that.

In raw domestic grosses, it notched the largest opening weekend ever for any kind of biopic (American Sniper earned $89 million) and the biggest debut for any Lionsgate movie that isn’t a Twilight Saga sequel/Hunger Games movie. That means it’s the 22nd biggest opening for a non-sequel, and even higher if you discount any affiliations with major IPs. It opened moderately over expectations, and will still have pundits scratching their heads about how a non-white lead managed to usurp records. This is all withstanding the fact that critics have not been kind to its distribution, even though audiences adored it enough to grant it an A- from CinemaScore.

But it seems that critics from whichever ivory tower they sit in don’t seem to “get” that their commercial disservice by slandering the film is actually helping it. Yes, even this writer notes in our review that this film is more of a super-hype reel of Jackson’s more pertinent moments in his career. However, as we also noted like everyone else on their deathbeds, the exuberant music sequences, Jaafar Jackson’s committed performance, and the “for the fans” existence would still put butts in seats for another fascinating look at the King of Pop. The lack of Janet Jackson and the child molestation allegations didn’t need to be in the film; it was purely to create another sensation. And in that case, it works because Michael Jackson is a renowned name for decades and will remain so for decades to come. No one does music like Michael, and no one perfected his goals like him.

Going back to legs, it will probably finish its domestic run around $225-250 million, especially if it frontloads a la Straight Outta Compton. And thanks to Universal’s distribution input, it can safely make well over $450 million worldwide. May will point out how strong its legs are against the competition, or, if, like Michael, it doesn’t fear any of the competition, can ram more to $500 million worldwide. Dare we say it could moonwalk ever further?

In other news, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earned $21.2 million this weekend, bringing its domestic cume to $386.4 million. It has already passed $831 million worldwide, so it’s easy to see that the pop icon has taken some of its legs off (though this can be argued, as it still remains in the fold because it caters more to a different subset of the family demographics). Whether it can climb to $1 billion remains to be seen, but it will not catch its predecessor (nor does it have to), and it will still yield more from the Nintendo universe (because it surely wants to).

Project Hail Mary has passed $600 million worldwide, which is excellent news for the Ryan Gosling feature. It will most likely pass F1‘s $634 million global cume. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy has only passed $65 million worldwide in its second weekend; it’s surely been a casual reminder that we’ve had enough of the beats, so this is only to be served on the sidelines for anyone wanting to witness. The Drama has passed $76 million worldwide; Zendaya isn’t quite on the level of a Sydney Sweeney in terms of draws, but she will still be praised nonetheless for trying.

Hoppers is going to finish its run at around $375-380 million worldwide, You, Me & Tuscany will make it to $25 million globally, and Mother Mary opened in a wider release with $1.23 million. And the other newcomer, Over Your Dead Body, opened with $1.495 million.

Next weekend will see the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2, Animal Farm, Deep Water, Hokum, One Spoon of Chocolate, and Casa Grande.

Box Office: ‘Mario’ Heads to $750M Globally & ‘The Mummy’ Proves Original Is Better https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/04/19/box-office-mario-heads-to-750m-globally-the-mummy-proves-original-is-better/ https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/04/19/box-office-mario-heads-to-750m-globally-the-mummy-proves-original-is-better/#respond Sun, 19 Apr 2026 20:02:19 +0000 https://atthemoviesonline.com/?p=37699 Well, summer is coming early (especially for those in the warmer regions), but we are down 39% compared to this same weekend a year ago (even if said weekend was Easter and had the likes of Sinners opening with $48 million and A Minecraft Movie earning $40 million in its third weekend).

So let’s get on with it. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie inevitably led the box office again in its third weekend, bringing in $35 million, and it will pass $750 million globally by tonight. And yes, it goes without saying that its 2023 predecessor was much leggier and more mighty than this second ride around “the galaxy.” A $405-410 million domestic finish seems to be on the floor for this sequel; whether it joins Lilo & StitchMinecraft, and Zootopia 2 in over/under $425 million will depend on how much of the period between now and Memorial Day plays to cut off the family-friendly demographics. Nintendo is basking in the glory, though, so it can’t complain much about the animated IP and a $110 million budget. The announcement for the third chapter should be upon us in the moment of unparalleled perspicacity.

Kudos to Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary, which will pass $300 million domestically by next weekend and $600 million worldwide soon. The biggest elephant in the room is how competition fares for the next month, dissecting its quadrants a la Michael, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Sheep Detectives, Mortal Kombat II, and The Mandalorian and Grogu. Meanwhile, The Drama will be passing $40 million domestic sometime tomorrow and will be A24’s eighth-highest domestic earner.

For newcomers, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy clearly was more of a subliminal eyeroll from audiences. A C+ from CinemaScore and middling reviews won’t do it justice, even if its debut was “fine” with $13.51 million to start off. Yes, it has no connection to Brendan Fraser, but maybe leaving it only in solitary confinement sometimes is the way to go. Other newcomer Normal is no Nobody, as the latter title starring Bob Odenkirk opened with $6.8 million in the summer of 2021, right before theaters were warming back up in the post-COVID environment.

You, Me & Tuscany has passed $15 million worldwide, while Hoppers will pass $360 million worldwide by tomorrow morning (it will probably finish its domestic run around $170-175 million).

The Exit 8 took in $669k in its second weekend, while The Christophers earned $596k.

Next weekend will see the release of Michael, Apex (on Netflix), Over Your Dead Body, Desert Warrior, and Omaha.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie closed its second weekend with $69 million domestic (48% drop); compared to its predecessor, it is down roughly 25% in second-weekend earnings and 12% in domestic earnings. Not a point of contention to drop “Mamma Mia!”, because it’s already soared past $300 million domestic and $625 million worldwide, and is already the third-biggest video game film. Based on a conventional rate of descent, it will probably strive for $500 million domestically and $1 billion worldwide to wrap it up, which would push it past A Minecraft Movie to take its apropos place behind its predecessor’s run in 2023. That means it is already doing the wondrous work akin to many of Illumination’s past titles, a la Despicable Me/Minions, and will still remain the biggest kid-friendly film in town, despite the upcoming prospects of Michael, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and Mortal Kombat II. Mario might be taking another lap with the kart, but he sure as hell is gathering all the wins he can while Nintendo collects its coins.

In other great news, Project Hail Mary earned $24.58 million in its fourth weekend, bringing it to $257 million domestically and $510 million worldwide. It’s a few days away from passing Gravity ($274 million in domestic unadjusted totals) and will most likely pass $300 million domestically. $600 million worldwide seems like a no-brainer at this moment. A24’s The Drama dipped 39% in its second weekend, earning $8.7 million, and has passed $65 million worldwide. Maybe some controversy wrapped in the good word keeps folks coming to titles like these, and history has shown that folks will show up for non-franchise, adult-skewing movies. It’s not always about Marvel, DC, Nintendo, or even Pixar that takes the crown.

You, Me & Tuscany opened with $8 million in North America, which is a decent start, but probably took some brunt of the damage thanks to A24’s latest title. The Halle Berry and Regé-Jean Page offering might find more success once it is released on streaming. Hoppers has passed Elemental‘s domestic total to become Disney’s biggest original animated film since Coco. Faces of Death and The Exit 8 opened with $1.7 million and $1.4 million, respectively. Reminders of Him will pass $50 million domestically by next weekend.

Scream 7 will probably finish its run around $220 million worldwide, while GOAT has passed $185 million worldwide. Ready or Not 2: Here I Come will crumble just under $42 million worldwide.

Next weekend will see the release of Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, Mother Mary, Normal, Roommates (on Netflix), and Ballistic.

That’s right, the toon earned $130.94 million over the Fri-Sun weekend, and has passed $190 million since its debut on Wednesday. And yeah, it has soared to $370 million globally, which is the biggest worldwide launch since Avatar: Fire and Ash. If we compare it to its predecessor, it dipped slightly, from a $146 million Fri-Sun weekend and a $205 million Wed-Sun weekend. Well, is it time to flock in about the video game being a fatigued franchise?

Hold the bullhorn; folks from the past and present enjoy the brothers and Peach on their journeys, so let’s say we might be more entangled with them than The LEGO Movie Part 2, Secret Life of Pets 2, and The Angry Birds Movie 2. I wouldn’t expect reviews to get much in the way, any more than one could say the second dance always comes at a cost of “not much changed this time around,” so even barring a 25-30% drop in total compared to its predecessor means it can still raise the green flag past $400 million domestic and probably $960 million worldwide (checks notes, yeah that’s on par with A Minecraft Movie!). It will probably even skirt into the $1 billion category due to A) being the sole kids/family-friendly film in town for the next patch of weeks and B) given Illumination’s track record with the family fun time of Despicable Me/Minions, it’s safe to say it will carry its weight like them. So, “it’s a-me, Mario!” might keep up the healthy ecosystem for time to come this season, and we’ll see how the demographics work for other titles on the way, including Michael, Devil Wears Prada 2, Mortal Kombat II, and then The Mandalorian and Grogu.

In other (great) news, Project Hail Mary earned $30.6 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic cume to $217.1 million. And if we combine the overseas numbers, it has passed $421 million worldwide. Yeah, it’s excellent business as the summer season wanes over us, and it will pass $550 million worldwide once it’s done (and Michael has taken some of its demographics and IMAX theaters away). And if you’re an optimistic writer like this one, it may even make out to $600 million worldwide like the recent F1, or aspirational movies a la The Martian and Lucy in the mid-2010s. Ryan Gosling will finally have a star vehicle he can rely on once he pushes through, and maybe it’s another sign that the sci-fi for going to space was never dying in the first place.

Newcomer The Drama earned $14.38 million in its debut, the third-biggest domestic opening for A24, behind Marty Supreme and Civil War. Hmm, now where did we see a debut like that two years ago? It might be emblematic of a growing possibility: much like Sydney Sweeney, Zendaya might also be a draw. Even if we don’t factor in the MCU Spider-Man quadrilogy and Dune trilogy, she still kicked butt with Smalfoot and The Greatest Showman, and is rocking folks around with the upcoming season three of Euphoria. There have been (and still will be) times when actors/actresses, rather than marquee characters/IP properties, carry the weight of a film delivering on its promise. Gerard Butler and Jason Statham spring to mind as household names (you can get your Plane next to The Beekeeper). So, anyway, A24 might be the new home of youth-skewing, romantic dramas and rom-coms (or originals to pique the audience’s interest for the next ride to the multiplex).

Hoppers is days away from passing Elemental‘s domestic cume, and will probably finish its run around $375 million worldwide. No, that’s not a blowout success for Pixar, but it’s a return to “potential” form for the next originals to dawn and melt hearts. Reminders of Him passed $80 million globally, A Great Awakening opened with $2.113 million, and They Will Kill You has passed $15 million worldwide. GOAT has passed $185 million worldwide, while Scream 7 has passed $209 million globally. Oh, and Dhurandhar: The Revenge will be passing $100 million worldwide shortly.

Next weekend sees the release of You, Me, & Tuscany, Outcome, Thrash (on Netflix), Faces of Death, The Christophers, Beast, Newborn, and The Yeti.

Box Office: ‘Project Hail Mary’ Holds The Fort In Tremendous Fashion and Passes $300M Worldwide https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/03/29/box-office-project-hail-mary-holds-the-fort-in-tremendous-fashion-and-passes-300m-worldwide/ https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/03/29/box-office-project-hail-mary-holds-the-fort-in-tremendous-fashion-and-passes-300m-worldwide/#respond Sun, 29 Mar 2026 21:27:54 +0000 https://atthemoviesonline.com/?p=37515 Well, if you’re going to try to outlast the likes of an Oppenheimer or F1 in terms of legs, I think this takes the crown (until The Super Mario Galaxy Movie this week). With a huge surplus of momentum, rave reviews, and discussions, Project Hail Mary took $54.5 million in its sophomore weekend. It has already passed $164 million in North America and, checks notes, $300 million globally. It ain’t no sequel, prequel, spin-off, remake, or reboot of an already existing cinematic empire, and it’s vaulting over a gargantuan amount of original titles in the last decade alone in terms of legs.

Sure, we can claim that Ryan Gosling has not been a box-office lead, but with a welcome bit of alacrity, this might be his true star vehicle to bank on (if he surely couldn’t do it for The Fall Guy or Blade Runner 2049). This latest chapter has earned more than Nolan’s acclaimed Oppenheimer in weekend two, and if we do the math, that means the Phil Lord and Christopher Miller-directed project will most likely reach $300 million domestically. It could swing even further, but we’ll see what kind of boisterous competition lingers for the April season. Nevertheless, it’s already a must-see attraction and MGM’s highest-earning title thus far. Maybe if MGM can sell more attractions like this, which do not rely on pre-existing IP and more on something fresh and original, they’ll fill 20th Century Fox’s shoes at some point.

In other news, Hoppers earned $12.2 million this weekend and is going to pass $300 million globally by tomorrow morning. Once it passes $154 million domestic (probably by Friday), it’ll be Pixar’s biggest domestic earner since Coco. Again, this writer is curious to see if it will hold out, as the competition will be stiff with Illumination’s latest Mario ride, and kids do love some animated setpieces of renowned characters more than unknown ones…well, let’s simply state that Disney has been making repairs to restore Pixar.

In more atrocious news, They Will Kill You only earned a meager $5 million in its opening weekend. Not exactly the type of news for WB, especially the highs they were on last year (even if Paramount’s bid for acquisition is more graceful than Netflix’s). Maybe it’s the undercutting of the narrative from the first act, or folks were simply dealing with Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (which earned $4 million in its second weekend). Dhurandhar: The Revenge has become India’s biggest domestic earner. Reminders of Him has passed $40 million at the domestic box office.

Scream 7 has passed $200 million globally, GOAT has passed $100 million in the U.S. and Canada, and Forbidden Fruits opened with $1.17 million domestically. And The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist opened with $650k from 786 theaters (guess no one wants to watch about artificial intelligence if they’re already bearing witness to it!).

Next week, prior to Easter weekend, we will see the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, The Drama, Pizza Movie (on Hulu), A Great Awakening, and A Love Like This.

Box Office: Sail to New Heights ‘Project Hail Mary’! https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/03/22/box-office-sail-to-new-heights-project-hail-mary/ https://atthemoviesonline.com/2026/03/22/box-office-sail-to-new-heights-project-hail-mary/#respond Sun, 22 Mar 2026 19:46:12 +0000 https://atthemoviesonline.com/?p=37443 Ok, ok, ok! Mr. Ryan Gosling finally outdid himself on a project that speaks to his strengths, whilst giving him a robust film to kick off the weekend before Easter comes rolling around. The fact that his latest sci-fi blockbuster, Project Hail Mary, opened with $80.6 million in its debut gives MGM Studios some bragging rights in the interim, and with great perspicacity, something for us critics (or cinephiles or analysts, whatever term you wish to coin) to rejoice over.

This is a big live-action film, released solely as a movie, with all the hallmark ingredients of what makes a non-franchise, adult-skewing film. Excellent reviews (including an A from CinemaScore), an easy pitch of a premise for folks to follow, and the promise of cinematic escapism. Perhaps folks were not as interested if it were solely banked on directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord in their first live-action theatrical outing since 22 Jump Street, but it shall be reserved as a bonus. Gosling, as we’ve gone on record before, has not been the definitive draw in many recent blockbusters, even if he shows great merit in a supporting role, a la Barbie. With this breakout performance, it has easily toppled Creed III’s $58 million debut in 2023 to become MGM Studios’ biggest opening thus far, and it ranks second only to Oppenheimer among breakout “just a movie” films.

With $60 million from overseas, it’s already sitting at a $141 million global tally on a $190 million budget. If it legs like a champion for the next few weeks, a $450 million global finish is a good possibility to justify its marketing expenses. MGM Studios jumped into the deep end of the pool with this outing and proved they could mount a worthwhile offense when concepts and actors became endangered species compared to the IPs and marquee characters everyone and their grandmother knows.

In other news, Hoppers dipped 37% this weekend with $18 million, bringing its domestic cume to $120.4 million. It is a few days away from passing Migration and will most assuredly surpass Elemental‘s $154 million domestic total to become the second-highest domestic toon since Coco. Pixar’s latest outing will be passing $250 million globally imminently as well.

Dhurandhar: The Revenge opened with $9.572 million in third place. Its predecessor, Dhurandhar, opened last year’s post-Thanksgiving frame with $1.98 million in 391 theaters, then launched to $3.5 million and eventually legged out to $19.7 million. Good stuff for a Hindi thriller.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come opened with only $9.1 million, which is somewhat muted compared to its well-liked and lower-budgeted predecessor. Maybe it’s a perilous “too little, too late” situation, while other folks will claim it got whammed by Ryan Gosling doing Ryan Gosling things. Reminders of Him dipped 56% in its second weekend, earning $8 million. Scream 7 will end up netting less than twice its $63 million weekend, even though it will surpass $200 million worldwide.

GOAT will pass $100 million in domestic sales sometime by Tuesday night. And Undertone has passed $15 million in domestic revenue.

Next weekend sees the release of They Will Kill You, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, Forbidden Fruits, and Fantasy Life.
